TRUMP ATTACKS A CITY AND A CANDIDATE BEFORE HE EVEN OFFICIALLY LOST
Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Democratic Senate primary early Wednesday morning. Within hours, Trump had posted two Truth Social messages that managed to insult a major American city, accuse it of fraud with zero evidence, and use a slur-adjacent religious dog whistle against the first Muslim candidate poised to potentially serve in the U.S. Senate — followed by a Fox News interview where he called entire American cities “filthy, disgusting, dirty.”
THE POSTS, IN HIS OWN WORDS
As Wayne County’s votes came in favoring El-Sayed’s opponent in early counting, Trump wrote: “Wayne County (Detroit) in Michigan is one of the most corrupt voting areas in the United States, if not the World. It is strictly Third World! Miracles happen in Wayne County, including more votes being cast than there are voters, by a lot.” He offered no evidence for any of this — no cited investigation, no specific irregularity, nothing beyond the assertion itself.
He continued: “The Communist, who is not liked in Detroit, is potentially in ‘Vote Counter’ trouble… don’t discount all of those fake mail-in ballots that will ‘surprisingly’ show up at the last moment. Get ready for another Rigged Election. In November we must VOTE FOR MIKE ROGERS, and make Michigan TOO BIG TO RIG.”
Then El-Sayed actually won, and the story flipped instantly, tellingly, into “good news”: “Great news for the Republican Party. El-Sayed, a Communist loser who hates Jews and Israel, is the projected winner in his race with the Socialist… As usual, the Polls were way off on this one.”
Notice the whiplash. When it looked like El-Sayed might lose, Detroit’s votes were fraudulent, the election was rigged, and Michigan needed to be made “TOO BIG TO RIG.” The moment El-Sayed actually won, the same election became legitimate enough to celebrate as “great news.” The fraud claim wasn’t a considered legal position — it was a placeholder for whichever outcome looked worse for Republicans in that specific hour.
THE “DIRTY CITIES” INTERVIEW
On Fox News with Trace Gallagher, Trump went further, framing entire American cities in explicitly dehumanizing terms: “You go to these cities that are taken over by the socialists and the communists, they’re always filthy, dirty. They’re disgusting… Aside from crime, aside from all of the other problems — no jobs, no anything, no money — they’re always filthy, disgusting, dirty, and that’s what you’ll get.” He’s previously put it even more bluntly on record: “With Communism, everything turns to sh*t.”
Worth being precise here: El-Sayed has not been endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America. Trump’s entire “communist” framing rests on associating El-Sayed with Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez campaigning for him — guilt by proximity, not by any actual affiliation, applied to a Rhodes Scholar and former Detroit health department director whose platform centers on Medicare for All and reducing money in politics, not seizing property or abolishing markets.
THE DOG-WHISTLE ELEMENT WORTH NAMING DIRECTLY
El-Sayed used the phrase “inshallah” — Arabic for “God willing” — in his victory speech, a completely ordinary expression across multiple faiths and cultures, and Trump-aligned commentators attacked him for it before the race was even officially called. Combined with Trump’s own repeated false claim that El-Sayed is “an Egyptian citizen” (he was born in the U.S.; he’s a natural-born American citizen), there’s a clear, deliberate pattern here: casting an American-born Muslim candidate as foreign, dangerous, and inherently suspect, using language calibrated to make his identity itself the disqualifying factor rather than any actual policy position.
THE HYPOCRISY WORTH SITTING WITH
This is coming from a president currently facing his own documented corruption on a scale that dwarfs anything alleged, let alone proven, about Wayne County’s vote count: a $1.776 billion fund built from suing his own government and settling with himself, over $800 million in corporate “donations” collected through what his own former staff calls a shakedown operation, a $27 billion government equity stake portfolio with no public ledger, and a Justice Department under his former personal lawyer that’s now indicted a political opponent three separate times. The man alleging Detroit fabricates votes without evidence is the same man whose own administration’s actual documented conduct — verified through court filings, WSJ investigations, and his own officials’ on-record statements — reads like the corruption he’s accusing a city of imagining.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Baselessly calling a major American city “corrupt” and “Third World” hours after an election doesn’t just insult Detroit’s roughly 630,000 residents. It’s a rehearsal — the same playbook of pre-emptively delegitimizing results that don’t go your way, deployed here in real time, on a night when the results briefly looked bad and then, once they didn’t, got recast as a win to spin instead. That’s not principled skepticism about election integrity. That’s a script that changes based on who’s winning, run by the same man whose own conduct in office is the actual, documented scandal in this story.
