FOR THE 43RD TIME. NOBODY IS SURPRISED. THAT’S THE PROBLEM.
This weekend, at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster — a course he personally owns — Donald Trump announced he’d won the Senior and Super Senior Men’s Club Championship with a reported two-under-par 70. It’s his 43rd club championship victory across the golf properties he owns worldwide. Not his 43rd tournament entered. His 43rd win.
Trump didn’t just accept the trophy quietly. He posted the winning shot to Truth Social with a full presidential sign-off, adding: “I won with a score of 70, and am so honored in that, unlike the rest of the field, I’m given very little time to practice, because I’m focused on many other things. It’s called TALENT, and I have it, and they don’t!” — a message that manages to be both a victory lap and an insult to every other member of the club he beat, at the club he owns, refereed by staff he employs.
THE PART THAT’S ACTUALLY FUNNY, NOT JUST ABSURD
The internet did the math nobody official seems willing to do. “I’ve seen his swing, he didn’t shoot 70 unless he cheated and played from the short tees. No way,” read one widely shared reaction. This wasn’t even the first cheating accusation of the week — the same round followed reports that Trump had previously called a different club’s pro shop and simply demanded he be awarded that course’s championship too, footage of which has been circulating alongside this latest win. The White House then leaned into the bit rather than away from it, posting his 2025 scorecard on Instagram with the caption “Winning on and off the course” — as if daring anyone to ask the obvious question: how does the owner of the golf course, who sets the rules, staffs the scorers, and controls the tee placements, keep winning his own tournament by such convenient margins, for over a decade running?
WHY THIS DESERVES MORE THAN AN EYE ROLL
It’s easy to file this under “harmless rich-guy vanity.” It shouldn’t be filed there. This is the same pattern that shows up everywhere else in this administration, just in miniature and lower stakes: an institution Trump controls produces an outcome flattering to Trump, and the people positioned to actually check that outcome — club staff, scorers, the golf press covering it — either don’t or can’t say otherwise, because their jobs and access depend on staying in his good graces. Swap “club championship” for “IRS settlement” or “election fraud commission” and the shape of the story is identical: the man grading his own performance keeps winning, and everyone downstream of his paycheck keeps confirming it.
Forty-three championships. Same guy. Same course he owns. Same pattern, every single time, and somehow it still gets treated as a punchline instead of a preview.
