Someone Called CPS on Pete Buttigieg’s Four-Year-Old Twins. We Need to Say Clearly What That Is.
An anonymous caller reported to Child Protective Services that Pete Buttigieg’s 4-year-old twins were “at risk.” The caller said that he had spoken to a woman who claimed to have met Buttigieg at a conference several years ago in Alabama, where she said Buttigieg told her that he had committed “unspeakable violent crimes,” and the caller believed his children were still at risk. There was no conference in Alabama. Buttigieg has never been to the town the caller described. The allegation was fabricated from nothing. Following an investigation by the Michigan State Police, the report was deemed unfounded. NPR
But before it was deemed unfounded, a CPS worker and a police officer knocked on Pete Buttigieg’s door. And then something happened that every parent reading this needs to sit with.
Buttigieg was told he could not be alone around his children until an interview could take place the next day. “They asked if I had relatives nearby or could perhaps stay at a hotel for the night,” he shared. In the end, the children stayed at their grandparents’ house after a family dinner. “The twenty-four hours until they returned are among the darkest hours of my life. I tried to get my head around the idea that I had been accused of something so serious that I couldn’t be alone around my own children, and had consented to have them interviewed by strangers, without my knowing where the accusation had come from or even what it contained.” Committee on Oversight and Accountability Democrats
Pete Buttigieg spent a night away from his four-year-old children because someone, anonymously, called Child Protective Services and said he had committed “unspeakable violent crimes.” The caller gave no evidence. There was no evidence. The entire story was invented. The children are fine. Buttigieg has been cleared. What This Is

Swatting is a crime. Filing a false report with law enforcement is a crime. Making a knowingly false report to Child Protective Services, causing a family to be investigated and a parent to be separated from his children, is a crime in virtually every state in America. The officer who responded to the call determined it was politically motivated. The case was not referred to a prosecutor.
Why not?
If the officer believes the report was politically motivated — which is to say, deliberately fabricated to harm a political figure and his family — then a crime was committed. A family was harmed. Four-year-old children were taken to their grandparents’ house because someone decided that the most effective way to attack their father was to call the government and tell them he was abusing them.
The anonymous caller should be found. The anonymous caller should be charged. The anonymous caller should be prosecuted to the full extent of whatever statute covers the filing of false reports with child protective services in the state of Michigan. If there is insufficient statute, one should be written. What happened to Pete Buttigieg and his family should be a crime with real consequences.
Why Pete Buttigieg
This did not happen randomly. Buttigieg is a gay man with an adopted family, running in the visible lane of Democratic politics, positioned as a potential future candidate for higher office. He is exactly the kind of target that the ugliest corners of right-wing media and politics have spent years trying to destroy. They have called his marriage illegitimate. They have questioned his parenting. They have insinuated, without evidence and without shame, that gay men who adopt children are a threat to those children.
The anonymous caller did not invent this attack from nothing. The anonymous caller assembled it from materials that have been circulating in fever swamps for years — the suggestion that Pete Buttigieg is not a devoted father but a predator, that his family is not a family but a scandal, that his children are not safe but in danger.
Someone heard those suggestions often enough and decided to act on them. Someone picked up a phone and called CPS and said what the ugliest parts of the internet had been implying, and waited to see what the government would do about it.
The government separated Pete Buttigieg from his children for a night. Which was, presumably, the point.
The Pattern
This is not the first time a prominent Democratic politician and his family have been targeted this way. Swatting incidents against political figures have increased dramatically. The escalation follows a predictable path: first, online harassment. Then, doxxing. Then, threats. Then, false reports designed to weaponize government agencies — CPS, police, FBI tip lines — against people who cannot be beaten on the merits.
Buttigieg called it “the ugliest thing that has ever happened to me in my career in public service.” That is a remarkable statement from a man who served in Afghanistan, who navigated the vicious politics of South Bend and Washington, who spent the 2020 primary being attacked from every direction by every candidate in the race. The ugliest thing. An anonymous phone call and a night without his children.
There are four-year-olds who spent a night at their grandparents’ house not knowing quite why. Who were interviewed by strangers. Who will not remember this. Who are fine. Who will grow up with a father who loves them and a father who was willing to tell this story publicly specifically to put a name and a face on what is happening to Democratic families in America in 2026.
What Cruelty Requires
This is cruelty. But it is a specific kind of cruelty — organized, targeted, and enabled by a political environment in which the dehumanization of gay people, of Democratic politicians, and of their families has been normalized to the point where someone felt perfectly comfortable picking up the phone and making that call.
The Republican Party did not make that call. But the Republican Party created the climate in which someone felt entitled to make it. Years of insinuation that gay parents are dangerous. Years of legislation designed to communicate that same-sex families are lesser. Years of rhetoric casting Democratic politicians as enemies of children — groomers, predators, threats — has consequences. The consequences knocked on Pete Buttigieg’s door on a weekday afternoon and made him sleep in a hotel while his twins stayed at their grandparents’ house.
The anonymous caller needs to be prosecuted. The officer who determined the call was politically motivated and then declined to refer it to a prosecutor needs to explain that decision. The media figures and politicians who have spent years creating the conditions for this kind of attack need to be named and connected to what they helped build.
And Pete Buttigieg needs to keep running for whatever he decides to run for, with his husband and his four-year-old twins, and dare anyone to try this again.
