“We’ll Bomb the S* Out of Them”

When the Threat List Includes Your Own Allies**

Oman has spent this war as a mediator, not a target. It hosted U.S.-Iran negotiations back in February, when Trump himself called the talks “very good.” It has stayed neutral, tried to keep shipping lanes functioning, and worked to broker exactly the kind of off-ramp Trump says he wants. On Monday, that got it a threat instead of a thank-you: Trump told Fox News that if Oman “gets in the way” of U.S. control over the Strait of Hormuz, “we’ll bomb the s*** out of them.”

The timing isn’t incidental. Monday marked 60 days since the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding calling for a peace deal within that window. No deal materialized. Instead, Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced it had reached its own agreement with Oman on managing shipping routes through the strait — a diplomatic solution moving forward without Washington. Trump’s response to an ally solving a problem he’s spent months trying to solve by force was to threaten to bomb that ally.

It’s consistent with a pattern, not an outlier. In March, in the middle of the same war, Trump threatened to “possibly” destroy Iran’s drinking-water infrastructure. After U.S. strikes hit more than 90 military sites on Kharg Island — an oil export hub — he said the U.S. had “totally demolished” the island and threatened to hit it “a few more times just for fun.” Monday, he also told Fox he’s “not in a hurry” to end the conflict and has “no time schedule” for it, even as he described Iranian negotiators as “dying” at the table.

Oman is the twist, though, because Oman isn’t Iran. It’s the Gulf state Washington has relied on for decades precisely because it stays out of everyone else’s fights and keeps a channel open when nobody else can. Threatening to bomb the mediator for brokering a deal the U.S. couldn’t close isn’t tough-guy leverage over an adversary — it’s punishing the one country in the region still trying to do the thing Trump claims to want.

The numbers don’t lie, even when the podium does.
